What Documents Are Needed and How They Are Legalized

The Smiths—John, Lisa, and their children Emma and Noah—had long dreamed of moving to Europe. After spending a beautiful vacation in Portugal, they decided to settle down in the Algarve. However, before they could start their new life, they had to prepare and legalize various important documents through the Apostille-Prozess in Florida to ensure they would be recognized in Portugal.

Fortunately, the Smith family received professional assistance throughout the entire process from attorney Caroline Campos, who guided them through the legal maze and helped them meet all the requirements of the Portuguese authorities.

What Documents Did the Smith Family Need?

  • Birth Certificates (for all family members):

To prove their identities in Portugal, the Smiths needed certified copies of their birth certificates. These were notarized in Florida and then received an Apostille through the Apostille-Prozess in Florida to ensure they would be recognized in Portugal.

  • Marriage Certificate:

To verify their marital status, John and Lisa needed a certified and apostilled copy of their marriage certificate. The Apostille made their marriage legally valid in Portugal.

  • Police Clearance Certificates:

A clean police clearance is required for a residency permit in Portugal. John and Lisa had their Florida-issued police records notarized and apostilled, following the Apostille-Prozess in Florida, so they could be submitted to the Portuguese authorities.

  • Children’s School Records:

Since Emma and Noah were to be enrolled in Portuguese schools, their school transcripts and immunization records needed to be presented and apostilled. The family arranged for these documents to be translated into Portuguese, ensuring compliance with the Apostille-Prozess in Florida.

  • Financial Statements:

To prove their financial stability, John and Lisa needed certified and apostilled bank statements and income records to apply for their residency permits, all obtained through the Apostille-Prozess in Florida.

Support from Attorney Caroline Campos

Attorney Caroline Campos assisted the family in properly preparing their documents and ensured everything met Portuguese requirements. She coordinated the translation of key papers, handled legal questions, and made sure the Apostille and notarization processes went smoothly. Her expertise was invaluable, as she not only clarified the Apostille process in Florida but also knew the exact requirements of the Portuguese authorities.

Since Portugal is a member of The Hague Apostille Convention, all public documents must be apostilled to be recognized in Portugal. In Florida, the Smiths received Apostille from the appropriate authorities after having their documents notarized.

Thanks to the support of attorney Caroline Campos, the Smiths successfully navigated all legal hurdles and prepared their documents on time. With apostilled, certified, and translated papers in hand, they set out on their new journey to Portugal.
