Digital Nomad Visa Spain

What You Need to Know in 2025

Digital Nomad Visa Spain

Spain has become one of the most attractive destinations for remote professionals, thanks to its official residence authorization for international teleworkers — more commonly known as the Digital Nomad Visa Spain. This program allows foreign citizens to live and work remotely from Spain while enjoying access to Europe and a high quality of life.

Below we break down the key requirements and processes you should know before applying.

Digital Nomad Visa Spain

Validity of the Permit

The residence permit works slightly differently depending on where you apply:

  • If you apply in Spain (the most common route for U.S. citizens):

    • The initial authorization can be granted for up to 3 years.

    • After that, it can be renewed for an additional 2 years.

    • Once you reach 5 years of legal residence, you become eligible to apply for long-term residence.

  • If you apply at a Spanish consulate abroad:

    • You will first receive a 1-year visa.

    • This converts into a 3-year residence card once you arrive in Spain.

    • At the next renewal, you can also qualify for long-term residence

Financial Requirements

To qualify, applicants must show sufficient and regular income:

  • For 2025, the minimum threshold is 200% of the Spanish minimum wage (SMI), which equals €2,646 per month.

  • Authorities generally want to see proof of ongoing, steady income rather than savings alone.

Professional Background

Applicants must demonstrate professional qualifications through either:

  • A university degree, or

  • At least 3 years of professional experience.

Required Documents

A few key documents are needed, though some common misconceptions should be cleared up:

  • Notarized and apostilled passports are not required.

  • An FBI background check is required, and it must be apostilled.

  • Other documents, such as proof of income, qualifications, and health insurance, will also be reviewed as part of the application.

Processing Times

Timelines differ based on where you apply:

  • Applications in Spain: The law provides a 20-day review period.

  • Applications from abroad (via consulates): Processing can take 2 to 3 months.

Tax Considerations:

The Beckham Law

Many applicants are interested in Spain’s special tax regime, known as the Beckham Law. Under this scheme, eligible workers can benefit from reduced taxation for several years. However, keep in mind:

  • You must not have been a Spanish tax resident in the previous 5 years.

  • It is available only for W-2 style employees.

  • Freelancers are not eligible under this regime.

How Remote from Spain Can Help

Our team at Remote from Spain assists with every step of your relocation process — from visa applications to navigating Spanish bureaucracy.

For document preparation, remember that some records from the United States (like the FBI background check) must be apostilled. For this, we collaborate with trusted partners such as Scribble Seal, who handle Apostilles and notarizations for U.S. documents.

If you are planning to apply for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, understanding the precise requirements can save you time and frustration. With the right preparation and professional support, living and working remotely from Spain has never been more accessible.
